Minister’s plea to end racial violence

NSW Local Government Minister, Ron Hoenig, has issued a statement following the violent assault of a Chinese woman and her husband in Sydney’s east last week.

Graphic footage of the attack was captured and released online, sparking outrage from the community.

The couple were allegedly attacked by a group of teenagers at their Eastgardens apartment complex last Wednesday.

Seven children – aged between 11 and 16 – have been arrested and charged over the incident. All have been granted conditional bail to appear in children’s court in June.

The incident prompted others in Chinese-speaking communities to speak out about similar experiences in Sydney over recent months.

“I am deeply concerned by reports of violent and racially motivated attacks on members of our Chinese community, including international students and residents here in the Heffron electorate,” said Minister Hoenig.

“While my office has received a handful of emails – some from local constituents, others from beyond our boundaries – the pattern they describe is distressing. Every person has the right to feel safe on our streets, regardless of where they come from or the language they speak.

“There is no place for racism in our society. Not in our suburbs. Not in our schools. Not in our streets. As the son of migrants, I understand how painful and personal this issue can be.”

Minister Hoenig said he has contacted the Eastern Beaches Police Area Command asking what actions are being taken to keep the community safe.

“I will continue to monitor this matter closely and ensure residents are kept informed.”

“To all Chinese students, migrants and families who have chosen to make Heffron their home – I want you to know you are welcome here. You are valued. You are respected. And I stand with you,” he said.
