Man who allegedly stole NSW Police vehicle to be extradited from ACT

NSW Police will today apply for a man to be extradited from the ACT after he was arrested on an outstanding warrant for allegedly stealing a police vehicle and assaulting an officer near Queanbeyan on Friday.

In a statement, Police said that at around 2.20am on Friday, officers from Monaro Police District were called to Malbon Street in Bungendore, following reports of a break in at a business.

“Upon arrival, police attended and found a man inside the premises. Officers attempted to arrest the man and a struggle ensued, during which the man allegedly punched an officer in the head. The officer discharged a Taser; however, it was ineffective,” Police said.

“The man got into a nearby marked police vehicle and conducted a U-turn, before he allegedly drove towards the two constables.

“One of the constables discharged their firearm, hitting the passenger door of the police car.”

Police say the man then drove from the scene in the Police vehicle, heading towards the ACT.

The stolen police vehicle was later recovered by ACT Police at the intersection of Canberra Avenue and Geelong Street in Fyshwick.

On Sunday morning, ACT Police officers arrested a 24-year-old man inside a car parked on Rosenthal Street at Campbell in Canberra.

The man is expected appear before the ACT Magistrates Court today where an extradition will be sought.
