A critical incident investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot by police at Taree this afternoon.
In a statement, NSW Police confirmed that at around 12.25pm today, officers were called to Rouse Street, Wingham, following several reports a man had fired shots into the air.
“Police attached to Manning/Great Lakes Police District attended and commenced a search of the area,” NSW Police said.
“Police later engaged with a man in the car park of the Manning Base Hospital about 12.55pm.
“During the engagement, the man allegedly pointed a firearm at the attending officers, and he was shot by police.”
Officers immediately rendered assistance to the man prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.
The man – believed to be aged in his 30s – was taken into the Manning Base Hospital, where he died a short time later.
A critical incident investigation team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
