Man caught with half kilo of cannabis after speeding through school zone

A man caught speeding through a 40km/h school zone in Logan is facing traffic and drug charges after Police found a half kilo of cannabis in the boot of his car.

In a statement, Queensland Police said officers carrying out school zone speed enforcement duties at Springwood on Tuesday detected a blue Mazda 3 travelling at 51km/h in a signposted school zone on Dennis Road.

“Officers intercepted the vehicle and issued the driver with a Traffic Infringement Notice for exceeding the speed limit in a school zone by 11km/h,” Police said.

“While speaking with the driver, officers allegedly detected a strong and distinctive smell of cannabis emanating from the vehicle. A roadside breath test and roadside drug test were conducted, both returning negative results.

“Police detained the driver and vehicle for a search, where it will be alleged officers located a brown bag in the boot containing a heat-sealed package of cannabis weighing approximately 472 grams along with over $3,000 in cash.”

A 24-year-old Ashgrove has been charged with one count of possessing dangerous drugs and one count of possessing property suspected of being the proceeds of an offence under the Drugs Misuse Act.

He is due to appear before Beenleigh Magistrates Court on 30 March.
