Major digital upgrade for WA Health record keeping

WA Health is heralding the completion of single sign on (SSO) and digital medical record (DMR) systems as major milestones in the state’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Program.

The Government says WA Health’s statewide roll out of the systems enhances the digital capability that supports the delivery of care to communities.

The initiatives, completed in August, are improving healthcare services by making them more connected and efficient, said Health Minister, Meredith Hammat.

“This significant milestone is about modernising and improving healthcare right across our State,” said Ms Hammat.

“Western Australia is geographically the largest health jurisdiction in the world, and these technologies help to bring us closer together and improve patient care.

“These innovations will help ensure that WA Health remains at the forefront of modern healthcare delivery for our community.”

The SSO, commenced in February 2023, simplifies the login process for clinicians, providing access to around 90 clinical applications with the tap of a card.

The DMR, which digitises paper-based patient records, ensures clinicians have real time access to complete, up-to-date patient records, in WA Health facilities across the State.

The systems are now live across WA Health sites, including those in Metropolitan Perth, Mid West, Kimberley, Wheatbelt, Great Southern, South West, and Pilbara.

As of July 2025, 44 million documents have been digitised, and approximately 13,000 WA Health staff access the system on a typical weekday.

The SSO system, is used by 27,000 clinicians across WA Health with 348,000 logins per week, reducing time clinicians spend logging into their systems, allowing them to focus more on patient care.
