Former NSW Director of Public Prosecutions, Lloyd Babb SC, has been appointed as a Deputy President and Judicial Member of the NSW Industrial Relations Commission.
Mr Babb (pictured) is recognised as one of Australia’s leading Senior Counsel with more than three decades’ experience including as Director of Public Prosecutions in both NSW and the Northern Territory.
Attorney General, Michael Daley said Mr Babb’s track record of independent, impartial decision making and extensive criminal trial and appellate experience, including before the High Court, will be an asset to the state’s independent workplace umpire.
“Lloyd Babb SC is an outstanding lawyer with a formidable intellect and an exceptional breadth of legal experience,” he said.
“He brings deep expertise in criminal law, professional leadership and a proven capacity to deal with complex and sensitive matters.
“His appointment is a welcome addition to the Industrial Relations Commission and will further strengthen its ability to serve the people of this state.”
Mr Babb first joined the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in 1993 as a solicitor and was admitted to the NSW Bar in 1995.
He went onto work as a Crown Prosecutor, Public Defender and Crown Advocate. He was the Director of Public Prosecutions in NSW from 2011 until 2021 and in the NT between 2022 and 2025.
Mr Babb will be sworn in on 28 July. His appointment follows the appointment of Deputy President Janet McDonald and four additional commissioners earlier this month.
