Victorian Attorney-General, Sonya Kilkenny, has announced the appointment of Justice Karin Emerton as the Chairperson of the Board of the Sentencing Advisory Council.
Justice Emerton will lead an independent review of the state’s Sentencing Act – the first since the Act came into effect in 1992.
“Congratulations to the Honourable Justice Karin Emerton on her appointment as Chairperson of the Sentencing Advisory Council,” said Ms Kilkenny.
“Sentencing absolutely needs to reflect community expectations, and I look forward to seeing Justice Emerton lead this important independent review.”
The Attorney-General said the review will consider whether the Act continues to meet community expectations, how sentencing can better support victims and ensure their voices are heard.
She said the Council will consult widely, to allow both experts and the public to provide feedback throughout the review.
Justice Emerton brings more than 30 years of legal experience to the role. She most recently served as the President of the Court of Appeal – making history as the first female President in the Court’s history.
She previously served as a judge of the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Victoria.
