Geotechnical works underway for Cessnock Road roundabout

The new westbound flyover at the Cessnock Road and New England Highway roundabout at Maitland is one step closer, with investigation work continuing from today.

The Federal Government is fully funding the $100 million upgrade, which is set to slash congestion on one of the Hunter’s most infamous roundabouts.

Transport for NSW has also identified upgrades to the intersection in the Hunter Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan to help support transport access, overall safety, and the economy in the region.

“The Hunter is growing before our eyes – new homes, new families and new businesses. We’re making sure the roads underneath them grow too,” said NSW Minister for the Hunter, Yasmin Catley.

“We’re not waiting for congestion to become the Hunter’s new normal. We’re planning the roads now so communities can grow without being squeezed by traffic.

“From Maitland to Newcastle and beyond, these roads are the arteries that keep the Hunter moving. We’re investing now to keep them flowing as this region grows.”

Starting today, Transport for NSW will undertake geotechnical and survey investigations on and around the New England Highway at the Cessnock Road roundabout to further inform the project for up to three months, weather permitting.

The work will include detailed surveys of the road surface, road corridor, drainage, as well as locating existing underground services and using machinery to investigate geotechnical conditions in the project area.

NSW Minister for Roads and Member for Maitland, Jenny Aitchison said it was fantastic to see work now progressing to finish the missing piece of the New England Highway at Maitland.

“This work will help inform the design of this important upgrade, which will improve traffic flow and help reduce congestion at one of Maitland’s busiest intersections,” she said.

“The former government built the eastbound flyover without delivering the westbound flyover at the same time. They didn’t do the proper work or planning, and left Maitland with an unfinished job.

“We’re pushing this project forward as quickly as we can, and we’ll get construction started as soon as possible.”
