The final piece of a critical underground pipeline beneath one of Hobart’s busiest transport corridors is about to be completed, bringing the city one step closer to a more modern, resilient wastewater system.
The works mark the final stage of the pipeline for the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation – a critical upgrade that is set to improve how wastewater is managed across the city and improve outcomes for the River Derwent.
TasWater General Manager, Project Delivery, Tony Willmott said the completion of the pipeline represents the culmination of many years of planning and construction management by our trusted Capital Delivery Office Partners, UGL Limited and CPB Contractors, delivering the works between the new Macquarie Point pump station and the future Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant at New Town Bay.
To complete the essential works, TasWater will temporarily close a section of the Tasman Highway near the Lower Domain Road intersection to install the final stage of the new 4.3-kilometre sewer pipeline.
“We understand road closures may cause some inconvenience, and we thank the community for their patience while we complete this important work that will improve the health of the River Derwent and support Hobart’s future growth,” said Mr Willmott.
Once the main pipeline works under the highway are complete, final sealing will be carried out in June, with only minor, short-term traffic impacts expected. All dates for these works are subject to weather and ground conditions.
The Selfs Point Sewer Transformation is co-funded by the Tasmanian Government and has provided the opportunity for 3,420 jobs and the generation of $1.1 billion in economic activity once construction has been completed later this year.
The transformation is TasWater’s largest project to date and is delivering a healthier Derwent for a growing Hobart.
