The Northern Territory Government is delivering an extra $250,000 to Neighbourhood Watch NT (NWHNT) to expand crime prevention programs across the Top End.
The funding will increase NHWNT’s operational capacity and enable the delivery of more targeted community engagement initiatives and public awareness campaigns to drive down opportunistic crime, said Chief Minister and Police Minister, Lia Finocchiaro.
“Restoring community safety remains the number one priority of my government. We want Territorians to feel safe and confident in their daily lives,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.
“We’ve seen a decline in robberies and house break-ins when comparing January to April 2025 with the same period last year, but we know there is always more to do to ensure people feel secure in their homes and communities.
“Neighbourhood Watch plays an important role in bringing communities together, preventing crime before it happens, and sending a clear message that we will not tolerate criminal behaviour anywhere in the Territory.”
NHWNT delivers a suite of trusted initiatives to help Territorians protect themselves and their properties, including personal protection sessions and absentee advice forms for residents going away on holidays.
Over the past year, the organisation has delivered nine personal protection sessions across urban, regional and remote communities, equipping Territorians with the practical skills and confidence to stay safe.
As part of this funding boost, two new staff positions will be created, one in the Northern region and one in the Southern region, ensuring communities right across the Territory can access these services.
Chief Executive Officer of Neighbourhood Watch NT, Veronica Larson said the funding increase was great news for neighbourhoods and communities across the Territory.
“Access to preventative safety information is key to helping Territorians feel safer and be safer,” said Ms Larson.
