The ACT Government is preparing to commence early works on the new Northside Hospital Project, marking the start of the largest single investment in health infrastructure in the Territory’s history.
Early works will include establishing construction areas and site compounds, upgrading and relocating existing services and utilities, demolishing some existing buildings, constructing new parking areas and building a new childcare centre.
“This work marks another step forward in building a new northside hospital that will serve Canberrans for decades to come,” said Minister for Health, Rachel Stephen‑Smith.
“Our focus is on doing the groundwork properly so the hospital can be built safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
“We understand that construction brings change and we’re committed to working with the local community, listening to concerns and keeping people informed as work progresses.
“Consumers will continue to play an important role in this project, helping ensure lived experience and diverse perspectives inform how the hospital is designed and delivered.”
A Development Application for the staged demolition of existing buildings on the North Canberra Hospital campus has been lodged and is now publicly available, with public comment open until 24 April.
ACT Health has confirmed the North Canberra Hospital will remain fully operational while early works are undertaken. However, there will be temporary changes to access, parking and wayfinding at various stages throughout the progression of early works, particularly in areas impacted by construction activity.
The Northside Hospital Project will deliver more health care capacity in Canberra’s north, to support the Territory’s growing population and changing health needs into the future.
The hospital will feature modern spaces designed to welcome patients and their families, provide easy access to the emergency department, with separate ambulance entry, and integrated spaces for teaching, training and research.
