Early works have commenced on the $400 million Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment, with expanded antenatal facilities set to improve access to maternity services for women, babies and families across Sydney’s Inner West.
“These early works mark the beginning of a transformation that will deliver a modern, purpose-built hospital that has staff, patients and the community at the centre,” said Sydney Local Health District Chief Executive, Deb Willcox.
“We are excited to see this project progressing and look forward to delivering a hospital that meets the growing needs of the Canterbury community for generations to come.”
The early works include the expansion and refurbishment of the existing antenatal unit to provide women and their babies in the local area greater access to these services ahead of the broader redevelopment.
The expanded antenatal facilities will nearly double the size of the existing unit, and will feature new patient areas, including additional ultrasound and consultation rooms.
“For our patients, it will mean improved access to services, high-quality amenities and an enhanced patient experience at what is often a very stressful time. For our staff, they will have contemporary, high-quality workspaces to match the high quality care they provide each and every day. It will also provide modern spaces for staff to take breaks and a modern education area to enable them to continue to build on their skills,” said Ms Willcox.
The existing antenatal unit will continue to operate during construction of the new facilities, with the expanded antenatal unit scheduled to open to the community in 2027.
Building contractor, TCQ Construction, is working with Health Infrastructure and Sydney Local Health District to minimise impacts for staff, patients, visitors and the community while construction is carried out.
The broader redevelopment will include the construction of a new nine-storey building, which will include the new intensive care unit, new inpatient units and other hospital support services.
The Main Works planning application for the redevelopment was recently placed on public exhibition, with submissions now being assessed, bringing the project one step closer to planning approval. A separate planning application will take place for the enhanced maternity services, once further planning and consultation has progressed.
Main works construction timeframes will be confirmed following planning approval and the appointment of a contractor.
