From Term 1, 2027, all Victorian secondary schools will be asked to include planned device-free time in their learning, the State Government has announced.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Ben Carroll said that under the new rules, where devices are used, they must be used intentionally.
“We know that screen-free time is important to help students engage with their learning, so we’re asking schools to include it in their curriculum,” said the Deputy Premier.
“This might look like using whiteboards or paper, group debates, practical experiments or performances instead.”
It builds on the Government’s work to limit digital devices to 90 minutes for Years 3-6 and minimal use in Prep to Year 2.
“We’ve also delivered a nation-leading device ban in schools to keep kids safe and engaged in their learning,” said Mr Carroll.
“This is on top of our historic $20 billion investment to build and upgrade schools across Victoria.”
Premier Jacinta Allan said less time on devices meant more time for learning.
“Every child, in every community, deserves a world-class education – that’s what Labor delivers,” said the Premier.
