The delivery of a new state-of-the-art hospital for women and babies at the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct and expanded services at Osborne Park Hospital has reached a major milestone with the appointment of contractor, WeBuild, to the $1.8 billion New Women and Babies Hospital Project.
Premier Roger Cook said WeBuild is a global leader in the design and construction of large infrastructure projects including hundreds of healthcare facilities, and one of Western Australia’s most significant construction projects, the METRONET Airport Line.
The project will replace the century-old King Edward Memorial Hospital and expand services for women, newborns and families from across WA, and will create more than 1,400 jobs during construction.
“We are excited to be partnering with WeBuild. They will draw from their international experience and bring innovation to the table for the benefit of the Western Australian community,” said Premier Cook.
“The appointment of a managing contractor represents a very significant milestone in our new Women and Babies Hospital – helping us deliver better health outcomes for Western Australians, while creating hundreds of construction jobs.
“The new hospital and expanded Osborne Park Hospital will create contemporary facilities where future generations will be born, and where important women’s health services will be provided.”
The new Women and Babies Hospital will also include inpatient facilities for gynaecology and maternity patients, a neonatology unit for newborns needing specialised care, operating theatres, a family birthing centre and outpatient clinics.
The Government is also doubling maternity services at Osborne Park Hospital, expanding gynaecology and neonatology at the new family birth centre.
Planning is also continuing for commissioning, final fit-out and operations of the new hospital, including ICT systems and medical equipment.
Construction is planned to start later this year with the building of the first multi-deck car park. A contract for this component of the project was awarded to the Georgiou Group in January 2025. Around 2,500 new car bays are planned for the precinct.
“The State Government has been working extremely closely with WeBuild through robust negotiations to finalise this contract so that we can get on with the job and deliver this important project,” said Health Infrastructure Minister, John Carey.
“Today’s signing signifies a major step forward which will deliver a brand-new public hospital at the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct and state-of-the-art health infrastructure.
“The New Women and Babies Hospital Project is continuing to progress to schedule, and crucially, we now have a top tier managing contractor with a breadth of global experience officially on board.”
Works are also underway on temporary offsite car parks, to support workers at the hospital precinct while the new multi-deck car park is built.
The Government also announced it would commence consultation next month with local government and other key stakeholders to deliver improvements to the transport network around the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct.
In the upcoming State Budget, $22 million will be allocated to deliver road upgrades in and around the precinct and $5 million will be allocated to begin planning future upgrades to Murdoch Train Station.
“This once-in-a-generation project will deliver contemporary new facilities for the families of Western Australia, who are ultimately at the heart of this important work,” said Health Minister, Meredith Hammat.
“To achieve that, we will be ensuring the managing contractor works with our newly established Project Community Advisory Groups.
“Staff working in the precinct during the construction stage are also front-of-mind. During construction of the new car park, offsite parking will be made available.
“Onsite car bays within the precinct will remain available for patients and visitors, and for staff working in critical and urgent care settings.”
Works on the hospital are expected to be completed in 2029.
