The Victorian Government’s Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade is progressing towards construction, with the contract for the project now awarded.
Construction company, Symal, has been appointed to deliver the upgrade, which is set to improve traffic flow, ease congestion, and make it safer to drive, walk and cycle through Wyndham Vale.
The upgrade will remove one of Wyndham Vale’s busiest roundabouts, replacing it with new traffic lights at the intersection of Ballan, Greens and McGrath roads.
It will also fully signalise the existing intersection at Ballan and McGrath (South) roads.
“We’re making it easier and safer for people in Melbourne’s west to get home sooner – replacing outdated roundabouts with modern intersections designed for growing communities,” said Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Gabrielle Williams.
“This is about delivering the infrastructure people in our outer suburbs need and expect, improving safety, reducing congestion and supporting better connections across Wyndham Vale.”
The project will deliver new pedestrian crossings, and a bus priority lane on Ballan Road to improve public transport reliability, making it safer and easier to move between home, schools, services and local businesses.
Around 800 metres of new walking and cycling paths will be built around the intersection, offering safer travel options for the community.
Crews will begin utility relocations and site establishment works this month, paving the way for major construction to begin in early 2026.
The $83.5 million Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade is jointly funded, with the Australian and Victorian governments each contributing $41.75 million.
The project forms part of the Victorian Government’s $767.55 million Road Blitz to Get Families Home Sooner and Safer package and builds on other major state investments in Melbourne’s west – including the soon to be completed West Gate Tunnel, as well as jointly funded upgrades to the Werribee Main Road – Princes Freeway interchange, Point Cook Road and Central Avenue, and Ison Road Overpass.
Together, the Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade and the Werribee Main Road – Princes Freeway Interchange Upgrade will support more than 1,620 jobs.
