Clean energy technology scientist, Dr Bjorn Sturmberg, has been awarded the 2024 ACT Emerging Scientist of the Year Award.
Chief Minister, Andrew Barr says Dr Sturmberg’s work explores how electric vehicles and batteries can integrate with the power grid.
“I would like to congratulate Dr Sturmberg on this incredible achievement and the extraordinary work that has seen him awarded 2024’s ACT Emerging Scientist of the Year,” said Minister Barr.
Dr Sturmberg (pictured) is a Senior Research Fellow in the Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program at The Australian National University (ANU) where he works on research, development, demonstration, and commercialisation of low carbon electricity and transport systems.
His research looks at ways to improve the efficiency and cost competitiveness of solar technology. He led the first retrofit of an Australian apartment complex into a solar and battery powered microgrid, where he realised the socio-economic barriers to decarbonisation and their impacts on social equity.
“I’m honoured to be the ACT Emerging Scientist of the Year and to represent the world leading clean energy research and development taking place at ANU and across the Territory,” said Dr Sturmberg.
“The ACT Government has been leading the transition to a zero emissions economy for decades. This includes supporting the creation of the Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program at ANU, which brought me to Canberra.
“I also want to thank all the ACT organisations whose partnerships have enabled my research and delivered real impacts. These include the ACT Government, ActewAGL, Evoenergy, ITP Renewables, and Zepben.
“Together, the ACT is making invaluable investments for a safe climate and prosperous zero emissions economy in our Territory, country and planet,” he said.
