Build contract awarded for WA mental health service

The WA Government has awarded a contract for the construction of the Broome Step Up/Step Down (SUSD) to EMCO Building.

The company will construct the purpose-built facility, which will be located at the Yinajalan Ngarrungunil Health and Wellbeing Campus.

The six-bed residential service will provide short-term, community-based mental health support for adults experiencing mental health issues, in a home-like setting close to their community, friends and family.

“This project demonstrates our commitment to delivering purpose-built infrastructure that supports better mental health outcomes for regional communities,” said Health Infrastructure Minister, John Carey.

“Locating the facility at the Yinajalan Ngarrungunil Health and Wellbeing Campus ensures it is accessible and integrated within the community.

“Our government is delivering this important service for the Broome community as part of our $4.9 billion health infrastructure program.”

The SUSD model of care bridges the gap between hospital and home by supporting people to develop strategies to manage their wellbeing and avoid hospital admission.

Additional support will also be provided to help residents transition back into their home and community by building healthy routines and coping strategies.

The State Government is investing $4.9 billion in health infrastructure, including in SUSD facilities to ensure people can access the mental healthcare they need.

“The Broome Step Up/Step Down Service is an important addition to mental health services in the Kimberley, to provide care in a supportive, home-like setting close to family, friends and community,” said Health and Mental Health Minister, Meredith Hammat.

“This service will help people manage their mental health and avoid hospital stays, ensuring they receive the right care at the right time.”
