Bespoke leadership program pays off for WA CFOs

The WA Public Sector Commission has partnered with the Department of Treasury and Finance to develop Technical and Leadership Capabilities for CFOs, a bespoke program that aims to boost the leadership capabilities, technical skills and professional networks of the sector’s CFOs.

Chief Finance Officer at the State Library of Western Australia, Ahmed Abumarzouq, recently completed the Leadership Capabilities component of the program.

“I wish I had done the program the moment that I stepped into the role,” Mr Abumarzouq shared.

“It’s moved me up from a compliance focus to be a more strategic CFO and I’m already applying everything that I learned.

“It is no longer about me always having the solutions, it’s about teaching people and empowering my team.”

Mr Abumarzouq said he also appreciates the connections he made, building a network of public sector CFOs where ideas are shared and common challenges tackled.

“You also learn from the CFOs from other agencies by hearing the real problems they face and how they solve them.”

“Because we are all in the same boat, dealing with similar challenges, having that network and shared knowledge is very valuable,” he says.

More information about the program is on WA.gov.au.
