ACT Govt seeks feedback on new conservation strategy

The ACT Government has released a draft Nature Conservation Strategy, which it says will guide how Canberra protects, restores and manages its natural environment in the years ahead.

The draft – which is out now for community consultation – sets out a whole-of-landscape approach to caring for the ACT’s environment, focused on conserving and restoring high-value natural areas across all land tenures, while adapting to climate impacts such as rising temperatures, longer bushfire seasons and more intense rainfall events.

“The new Nature Conservation Strategy will set a clear, long-term vision for our nature conservation goals in the ACT, guiding future legal, policy and program development, while supporting ecological recovery, conservation partnership and ensuring an enduring impact, achieving nature positive outcomes for Canberra,” said Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water, Suzanne Orr.

“Our natural environment is one of Canberra’s greatest strengths and we must act to protect and strengthen the resilience of our environment,” Minister Orr said.

“Healthy ecosystems are critical to a healthy city. They help cool our suburbs, protect water resources, support wildlife, and improve the liveability of Canberra for current and future generations.

“Developed in accordance with the Nature Conservation Act 2014, the new Strategy will support a nature-positive future, meaning the ACT’s natural values are not only protected from further loss but are actively recovering and regenerating in measurable ways.

“Supported by a new forthcoming Climate Change Strategy, and a soon to be appointed Government Landscape Architect, we are progressing important priorities to protect, recover, and improve our natural environment across the Bush Capital.

“Canberra’s climate is changing, and that has direct impacts on our unique environment, which is why we need a strong, practical strategy that protects biodiversity while supporting a growing city.

“Protecting nature is a shared responsibility. By working together including with Traditional Custodians, landholders, businesses and the broader community, we can ensure our bushland, waterways and wildlife are protected for generations to come. This consultation is about everyone working together to set the right direction.”

Community consultation will be open from Monday 9 February to Monday 23 March.
