The ACT Government has announced it will invest an additional $500,000 to support young people at risk of entering the justice system.
Through the Canberra Police Community Youth Club Inc (PCYC) Project 180 program, the funds will help provide trauma-informed support through mentoring, education and vocational pathways, and social and emotional development for young people.
The ACT Government’s investment through the Crime Prevention Fund will also expand opportunities for young people to participate in the P180 program. The funding will also increase access to on-site specialist services such as counselling and psychological support.
The Government says recent outcomes from the program highlight its impact including:
- 86% non‑reoffending rate among participants;
- 70% reduction in police interactions;
- More than half of participants achieving vocational qualifications or improved wellbeing outcomes.
Canberra PCYC A/g CEO Rikki Lloyd said the additional investment from the ACT Government recognises that early intervention works.
“Every young person deserves the opportunity to turn their life around before they enter the justice system,” he said.
“The additional funding will allow us to reach more young people through outreach support, counselling and psychological services, ensuring that those who may not yet be ready for a group program still receive the help they need.
“We’ve seen firsthand how the right support at the right time can reconnect young people with school, employment, training and their communities. This funding means we can support more young people and families across the ACT and continue delivering outcomes that change lives.”
Today, nearly a dozen participants graduating from the intensive 20-week program were recognised for taking significant steps toward education, training and employment pathways.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Marisa Paterson said the graduation marked an important milestone in the young Canberrans’ journey toward safer futures.
“The ACT Government is committed to investing in keeping our community safe. Programs like Project 180 provide early support to young people, helping divert them from entering the justice system in the first place,” she said.
“The program supports young people when they’re ready to make a change, helping them reconnect with education, training and employment, and reducing the likelihood of reoffending.
“It’s incredibly encouraging to see participants complete the program and take positive steps toward their future.”
ACT Chief Police Officer Scott Lee congratulated the young Project 180 graduates.
“It is very encouraging to see them taking steps to make positive changes in their lives, and PCYC is always there for support if they ever need it,” he said.
“ACT Policing is pleased to support the Project 180 Program that is delivered by the Canberra Police and Citizens Youth Club and their work with Canberra’s young people. It is important work, and a key platform in the wholistic approach to developing young people in our community.”
