Tasmanian Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Guy Barnett has announced the release of a Request for Tender to develop a digital Electrical and Gas Certificate Online Lodgement system to replace the state’s old paper-based system.
Minister Barnett said the move will help to tackle a red tape issue identified in partnership with industry.
“It will enable us to implement a digital solution to replace paper-based submissions with a faster, smarter online process,” he said.
“We are cutting red tape to ensure electricians can spend more time on the tools and less time doing paperwork.”
Under the Gas Safety Act 2019 and the Occupational Licensing Act 2005, electrical and gas practitioners submit compliance certificates confirming installations meet safety and regulatory standards.
“We’ve heard from the industry that the current manual lodgement process – via post, email, or in person – is slow, inefficient and burdensome and that’s what this online portal will change,” Minister Barnett said.
NECA Tasmania, Executive Director, Ben Shaw said the reform delivers real benefits for electrical businesses by cutting red tape.
“It will streamline compliance processes and bring lodgement into line with modern industry practices,” Mr Shaw said.
“It’s a practical outcome of strong collaboration between NECA and the Tasmanian Government.”
The new EGCOL will improve the system by:
o cutting turnaround times;
o improving data accuracy;
o strengthening regulatory compliance;
o reducing administrative load for practitioners and regulators.
