The memory of Queensland’s servicemen and women is set to be honoured in perpetuity, with the announcement of the inaugural round of the State Government’s Honouring our Veterans program.
The Government has pledged $6 million over four years for ex-service and community organisations through the grants program.
The first recipients include the P&C Associations for the Coomera and Granville State Schools, Trek2Health, Diamantina Shire Council, Townsville City Council, Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council, Flinders Shire Council, Wolvi and District War Memorial Hall, and the Legacy Club of Brisbane.
RSL Sub Branches from Kawana Waters, Kingaroy-Memerambi, Laidley, Western District Branch, Mossman, Kilcoy, Sandgate, Mareeba and Babinda are also inaugural recipients.
Grants are awarded for major projects such as building improvements, creating or refurbishing war memorials, avenues of honour and memorial gardens, and purchasing new equipment. They can also be received for supporting special events, activities and initiatives commemorating veterans.
Queensland is home to the largest population of veterans in Australia with more than 163,000 current serving and former Australian Defence Force personnel living in the State.
Premier and Minister for Veterans, David Crisafulli said the Government was delivering a fresh start for veterans and their families.
“We’re honouring heroes who put their lives on the line for our nation – this is our way to give back,” Premier Crisafulli said.
“This is about helping commemorate our current and past ex-servicemen and women, so generations of Queenslanders can recognise the great sacrifices they’ve made.
“We’re supporting our veterans and their families to make a real difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of Queenslanders.”
