Thirty-five e-bikes seized by NSW Police during operations near Tweed Heads on the state’s far north coast have now been destroyed.
Over the past 10 months, officers from the Tweed/Byron Police District have engaged with hundreds of e-bike riders as part of Operation Cyclesafe and Operation E-Voltage.
During a number of operational deployments, a total of 35 e-bikes were seized by police. NSW Police says forfeiture orders for several of the bikes were subsequently sought and granted through the courts.
The batteries were removed from the seized e-bikes before they were destroyed at a waste facility.
Tweed/Byron Police District Inspector Matthew Woods said such enforcement operations would continue.
“Operations will continue to be undertaken by both uniformed and plain-clothes police targeting the illegal use of e-bikes,” Insp Woods said.
“The community is frustrated by the anti-social behaviour of a minority, and they continue to report incidents to police.
“All information and intelligence received from the community is acted upon and greatly appreciated. This information has contributed to the seizure and destruction of these e-bikes.
“The message is simple and clear: ride safely and in accordance with legislative guidelines, or risk losing your bike.”
A further 23 forfeiture applications remain before the court.
