ACT Policing has welcomed 18 new constables, who will soon be deployed to the Territory’s five police stations.
At a ceremony attended by family and friends, police leadership and instructing staff, the four women and 14 men were officially welcomed to the ACT Policing team.
The new recruits, aged between 20 and 38 years old, previously worked in a range of industries including education, corrections, animal regulation, public service, retail and hospitality, and other policing roles before commencing their training at the AFP College.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Marisa Paterson, acknowledged the newest members of ACT Policing as they took their oath, recognising the commitment required to serve the Canberra community.
“Being sworn in marks the beginning of a significant public service responsibility. These 18 new constables are now entrusted with the safety and wellbeing of our community and will contribute directly to frontline policing across the ACT,” Minister Paterson said.
“Policing demands resilience, sound judgement and a strong sense of duty. Today’s recruits have demonstrated the character and capability needed to meet those expectations.”
“I commend each recruit on reaching this important milestone and extend my best wishes as they commence their service with ACT Policing on behalf of the people of Canberra.”
ACT Chief Police Officer, Scott Lee said the completion of recruit training was a significant achievement and provides a strong foundation for service in frontline policing.
“These 18 recruits now move from the academy into real‑world environments where what they’ve learned will be put into practice every day,” Chief Police Officer Lee said.
“Community policing offers constant variety and challenge, and our newest officers will be exposed to a broad range of situations as they work alongside experienced colleagues across the ACT.
“As their careers progress, opportunities will open across ACT Policing and the broader AFP, both locally and internationally. I congratulate each recruit on reaching this point and welcome them to the organisation.”
