A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with assaulting police while escaping custody in Tennant Creek.
At around 3:55pm on Friday, Northern Territory Police were attempting to arrest the youth when a struggle ensued.
“The male physically assaulted both police members while being taken into custody, before fleeing the scene on foot,” NT Police said in a statement.
“Neither member suffered significant injury from the assault.”
General duties police responded and located the offender at an address in Tennant Creek. At 4:20pm, he was arrested without incident and taken to the Tennant Creek watch house, Police said.
He has since been charged with two counts of assault police, escape custody and damage property.
“Assaulting a frontline worker who is trying to serve and protect their community is disgraceful,” said Superintendent Katie Hatzismalis.
“I am thankful that no one was seriously injured, and the offender will face court for his actions.”
