Support for students with complex behaviours and those who require targeted learning support has been given a significant boost in funding by the WA Government.
Education Minister, Sabine Winton, today announced $16.5 million in funding over two years for an increase to 64 full-time equivalent Complex Behaviour Support Coordinators in 192 Western Australian public schools.
The Minister said the initiative will help create safer, more supportive learning environments where every student has the opportunity to succeed.
“We are committed to giving every Western Australian student the best possible education, and these important initiatives provide support for those students who need it most,” she said.
“These measures will also free up the time of teachers so they can focus on what they do best – teaching.
“This is another step in the work the Cook Government is doing to reduce the workload of teachers so they can focus on helping our young people prepare for the future.
“I look forward to seeing the rollout of these key initiatives and continuing to work with the Commonwealth Government to provide support for WA’s schools.”
A further $21.8 million over two years has been committed for the Small Group Tuition Initiative, which will provide targeted literacy and numeracy support to students in 350 WA public schools.
“This initiative will help improve outcomes for students in need of additional support as well as reduce the burden on teachers to develop interventions for students with significant literacy and numeracy learning support needs,” said Minister Winton.
The funding is being provided through a landmark agreement with the Commonwealth that will deliver an estimated additional $1.6 billion in Federal and State funding from 2025 to 2029 for WA’s public school system.
The Workload Intensification Taskforce will monitor the rollout and impact of these new supports for schools.
